Class Descriptions
Parents do not stay for classes. The dressing room is available for any parent to stay during class as long as the students do not hear you. Parents, please do not talk in the waiting area or stay with noisy siblings.
Ballet & Jazz classes are determined more by ability as well as age. Creative Dance classes are divided more by age.
Creative Dance: Tiny Tots & Kinderdance
The Creative Dance classes are designed to introduce young children to the dance studio atmosphere and classroom setting while having freedom to express creativity through songs, rhythm, props and movement. Students learn how to count music, basic movement skills, partnering folk-style dances, tumbling, creative drama, singing, puppetry & more. The young dancers learn in a more relaxed atmosphere where FUN is the #1 priority.
Creative Dance develops the brain and helps teach children to think. They learn:
spatial development, the structure of choreography & performance, how to be an audience, communication & social skills, motor development, storytelling,
drama, visual art, cognitive development, healthy stretching - all while having fun!
Tiny Tots - 3-4 years old
Kinderdance - 4-5 years The children learn at a faster pace and have more challenging dances. Students are asked to commit to the school year when registering. Many of the dances in this class are partner based and a successful class is one that learns together.
Classical Ballet
There are four levels of ballet and students are placed by ability. All classes learn proper ballet technique with the classes focusing more on choreography during the spring. Training focuses on turnout of the hips rather than the feet to eliminate injury to the body. Learning correct body alignment has many benefits in other sports and activities. Having their class attire and hair pulled back off of their necks and face in a ballet bun is an important part of class and their learning. Parents need to help students be prepared for their class by sending them with all of their dance clothes including ballet slippers as well as having their hair ready, Always have hair ties in their dance bags. More advanced students will be on pointe.
Jazz
Styles include hip-hop, lyrical jazz, theatrical jazz, contemporary and basic jazz. All class levels include a warm-up for the first half of class consisting of technique and stretching followed by center work the second half working on technique and choreography. Students are required to wear fitted dance wear. Jazz classes focus as much on learning correct body alignment and technique as the ballet classes and having the correct dance clothing is also as important. (See dress requirements). Hair needs to be pulled back off the face.
Contempory/Lyrical
Lyrical is a style that uses both ballet and jazz dance with very expressive music set to lyrics. More advanced ballet and jazz classes have contemporary and lyrical choreography incorporated into their classes.
